Group 1

Long term Goals:

  • Anacapa will foster activities leading to TUI and student-led breakthroughs in theoretical physics
  • Greater theoretical physics community (the R1 researchers) will look to Anacapa for emerging new ideas
  • Greater scientific community (popular press, etc.) will look to Anacapa to explain modern developments in physics
  • By 2025, Walter Isaacson will be writing a book ("Deep Thought: the Anacapa Revolution") about how the Anacapa Society developed the ideas now at the forefront future of physics

Short term Objectives:

  • Develop collaboration networks for young theorists to succeed:
    • combine resources with each other and with established TUIs as mentors
    • assist in developing, writing, and receiving grant funds
    • share research strategies and questions
  • Invite interested, relevant, respected, and supportive R1 researchers to workshops to share ideas, offer support, etc. Possibilities include

    • to effectively share ideas within traditional subfields [AMO, QI, CM, GR, High Energy, etc.]
    • to cross-fertilize ideas across different subfields [computational methods, mathematical tools (group theory, field theory, differential geometry, etc.), foundational and philosophical issues]
    • to share methods, resources, and foster activities of TUIs [satellite meetings, etc.]
    • to develop and foster new subfields (the next revolution in QI/GR/...) faster than traditional organizations
  • Develop an organizational capability to communicate:
    • information pamphlets to recruit new members already at PUIs
    • promote the advantages, accomplishments, and impacts to PUI physics departments (to help recognize the importance of TUI)
    • press releases to promote accomplishments and activities to local and national media

  • Topical Meetings
  • More interaction with PUI theorists in our own subfields
  • Clearinghouse of information on sabbatical funding resources
  • Database of PUI theory contacts for mentoring, tenure letters, department evaluators, etc.
  • Events at larger conferences, e.g. a PUI theorist gathering at the March meeting
  • Events with fewer talks and more unstructured interaction time
  • More frequent meetings
  • Outreach to department chairs on the value that we bring: Publicity/case studies of successful PUI theory work with undergrad involvement

  • Organize topical meetings
  • Look at strategies on how to sustain small physics departments

    2. Share strategies on sustaining departments on web site

  • Look at strategies to sustain national interest in theoretical physics; overcoming loss of interest in theoretical physics—how can society increase awareness at federal government level of importance of theoretical physics as well as pass on awareness to prospective students?
  • Possible set up an award system—give to department or individual
  • Examine career connectivity for students within theoretical physics
    1. Possible put info on web site
    2. Create network for students that have jobs after theoretical physics degrees
  • Start Anacapa newsletter that highlights society’s activities (electronic)
  • Start organizational structure of officers in society
  • Create visibility for society—send off notice to physics department chairs
  • Reverse outreach—have info for R1 PhD mentors in order to help students who want to be placed into PUI’s
  • Have information directly for graduate students getting PhD’s interested in PUI employment—encourage membership to that audience
  • How should we incorporate instructors at community colleges and high schools?
