Wednesday and Thursday morning runs

A couple of us are meeting at 7am at KITP Wednesday and/or Thursday morning for a run. Everyone is welcome. All paces and distances!

Thursday evening BBQ at Goleta Beach

On Thursday evening, after our day's discussions, we will adjourn to Goleta Beach for a barbecue at approximately 5pm. The Barbecue will be in picnic Area C, with several tables and a grill.

Please sign up below if you plan to attend, indicating what you will bring.

Sunday hiking

A few of us are planning on hiking sometime this Sunday. If you are interested in coming feel free to join the google group I created for discussion. To join the group, simply search "hiking TUI-3" in google group directory, click "Sign in to view this group" with your google account and then apply for membership. Once your request is approved you can view and post topics. If you have any trouble joining the group let me (Tianran Chen) know or you can email me about your plans/suggestions.

Friday evening board games at West Cottages (Building 7095, not 7097)

Friday evening, starting at 6:00, we will have food and board games at West Cottages. We will provide pizza and (definitely) some wine; we will also have Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride Europe, and Monty Python Fluxx.

You bring whatever food, drink, or games you want to contribute.

Please let Alex or JiaJia (612-270-4690) know if you are planning to participate.

Thursday Evening Event at Art Museum in Downtown Santa Barbara

This Thursday evening the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA) is staying open late -- they will host a special exhibition walk-through for KITP visiting scientists and guests.
The event will start at 5:30 PM, downtown at the Museum.

Drinks will be provided at the Museum. This is a free event. The full event, including the exhibition walkthrough and drinks after, should not take much more than an hour.

Suggestion for after the museum: Dinner at Palazzio or Sojourner Cafe.

Suggestions for parking:
1) Public lot at Chapala and Figueroa
Directions to lot: Take the 101 to the Carrillo exit. Turn left onto Carrillo, then left onto Chapala. From Chapala, take the first right onto Figueroa, and the parking lot will be on the right.

2) Public garage on Anacapa Street (yes, that is the actual name).
Directions to garage: Take the 101 to the Carrillo exit. Turn left onto Carrillo, then left onto Chapala. Turn right on Victoria, then right on Anacapa. Garage will be on right side of one-way street.

Area Restaurants

Arnoldi's Cafe - Little Italian restaurant in historic stone building from 1930's with seating and bocce ball out back.

Beachside Bar & Cafe, down the hill from KITP overlooking Goleta beach.

The Boathouse - Seafood place right on Hendry's beach.

Brewhouse - Pretty much what you expect - beer and hearty food. For large groups, they require a pre-selected menu with only 4 entree choices.

Carlitos - Nice Mexican restaurant on State Street.

Edomasa - Sushi.

Olio Pizzeria - Highest rated pizza place in town, but kind of pricey (up to $20 for individual pie).

Opal - California/Fusion.

Trattoria Vittoria - Italian. Will only take large groups either early (before 5:30) or late (after 8:00).

Local Events


The Met: Live in HD

  • The Metropolitan Opera broadcasts HD simulcasts of operas to movie theaters all over the world. The live performances are Saturday matinees in New York, so they start here at 9:55am and are shown locally at the historic Arlington Theater in downtown SB and, in a smaller venue at Hahn Hall at the Music Academy of the West in Montecito. It will be rebroadcast again at Hahn Hall at 6:00pm on Saturday and at 2:00pm on Sunday.

Jazz & Folk Music

  • SB has but one place that features jazz and folk: SOhO Restaurant & Music Club .They have decent food if you want to eat before/during a performance.

Sport Activities

  • If you are interested in swimming/running/weightlifting or playing some sports like table tennis or soccer, you may wish to join UCSB's Recreation Center. KITP visitors pay the Community rate.
